Red-spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis)

This butterfly and the Viceroy are considered to be Admirals, i.e., members of the Limenitis genus.  In fact, the White Admiral, a northern butterfly, is considered to be a member of the same species.

Red-spotted Purple, Dismal Falls, Giles County, VA, 6/14/11	There's no question why this butterfly is called the Red-Spotted Purple! What's less obvious is that it shares the Viceroy's genus, Limenitis, and its species name is Arthemis. This butterfly showed up in Harnett County, NC on 8/10/04 during a NABA butterfly count and surprised us all by flying away despite its right wing condition.
